Well, I thought I would "expand my horizons" and learn unix.
I am a Amiga and Dos wiz and would like to learn more about
Unix (well Linux in this case)
I got the FAQ's the install docs and the .98 boot and root.
and it almost works 8`( on my Zenith 386-20.
When the Boot disk loads up it gives me the EGAc in the corner
and lists various screen modes but the text goes off the bottom
of the screen (at least 5 lines I would guess) I can't seem to
change the screen to be fewer rows. hitting any key just loads
the root image and it works fine too, just runs off the bottom of
the screen is all. Is there a way to change the number of rows
that linux displays? (I haven't installed it yet, just booting
off the floppies)
Also where is .99? I ftped .98 from Wuarchive (mirror site)
Thanks, from a would be linux-er

Oh, come on! We have gone through the procedure of a usenet vote in which
only one newsgroup passed; comp.os.linux.announce, look at the announce
of the results of the vote (it's in comp.os.linux and news.groups).
According to the usenet rules there won't be another CFV whithin six
months and therefore we cannot create another group(s) until June next
year. Please stop these 'Please split comp.os.linux'-articles and we will
all be as happy as we can be. I do want to split c.o.l. as much as you do
but I do not want to read zillions of articles without any value!

I have no networking capabilites, yet. (I'm waiting for
the SLIP releases.) However, I want to test the NFS and NFSD
software. Is there any way to do this with just the loopback
device? So far, it hasn't worked.
Currently, I have 3 IP addresses configured to loopback, and
they all work with a telnet session. In my rc.net file, I start
inetd, named, ftpd, portmap, nfsd, and mountd (in that order). When I
try to mount the file system loopback:/usr on /mnt, it
just hangs forever. It does print one message similar to "not
connected yet, still trying" on the next virtual console I open.
Should this work at all?

Actually the efs author has also mentioned that he will release
a program to convert to the new file system. A backup and restore
won't be necessary.
Also, I have been using efs from day one (about 4 months ago) as
my root partition with only two minor problems, and those may have
been my onw fault.
While I await the new efs with great expectations I use the
current version with great satisfaction.

Linux /proc handles this easily. Patch for GNU make follows.

Xol/StaticText.h
Where do I find these? Or does Xview only include a piece of the

Are the widget libraries available as freeware?
Are there any widget libraries available for Linux? Preferably ones
with documentation included :-)

I would like to hand over the task of maintaining and posting the
Meta-FAQ and the INFO-SHEET to somebody else. Preferably somebody who
has been using Linux for more than the past week.
What is required of the maintainer of them is to keep post them
periodically (this can be automated, I do it via my crontab), and
keeping them up to date. It isn't all that hard, but I have a few
other things that require my attention and feel that I can't do it
well enough. (I am also getting a bit tired of postings that ask for
things expressly covered by these documents, and if nothing else, this
makes me feel less than enthusiastic to devote more energy to them, if
they are going to be ignored by so many people.)
If you are interested, mail me, and tell me why you want to do it.

Subject: Serial driver issues
Date: 20 Dec 92 05:13:00 GMT
I've been playing around with Linux 0.98p5, trying to get it to communicate
with two serial printers, an internal modem, and a terminal. At the
moment, I'm typing this posting through the modem on /dev/ttys1 (with
the ATS25=50 setting I mentioned in an earlier posting, to deal with
momentary DTR lossage), and there's an interesting conflict with the
interactive session on /dev/ttys3.
COM1 and COM3 use the same IRQ vector, and what I see is that output
sent to ttys3 out at a *very* slow rate (like 30cps), and no input for
ttys3 is handled until after a byte is fetched on ttys1. (Example,
I type 'pwd' on the other session, and nothing echoes. I then type
another character into this posting, a 'p' shows up on the other session,
and the 'wd' are discarded.)
This may be a problem with misconfigured hardware (COM3 might be
jumpered wrong) or a bug in Linux' serial driver. Any theories? Has
anyone else run this kind of test?
Along similar lines, I notice that XON/XOFF flow control does not work
on this port. Even if I set the stop char to something other than
^S, output won't stop when I type it. Haven't tried other ports.
This means my serial printer won't work as it did under DOS.
Finally, the getty program appears to alter the clocal setting and a
few others for the serial device. I can't get it to work at all with
this serial port, since getty sees a hangup signal immediately. I've
had to make do with the 'doshell' program. Is there any way to make
getty not do this? Do I need to patch the source? Is this considered
a bug or a deliberate design?
If there are actually bugs here, as opposed to mere operator confusion,
I'd like to try fixing them prior to the 1.0 release.
Thanks!

What I would like to put on the wish list is for date(1) to update the
CMOS clock. My system has a basically dead battery, so the clock
doesn't actually run when I shut it off. When I restart the computer
(if it hasn't been too long) the result of a date is the same time at
which I shut the computer off.

Based on the alpha NE/2000 (et al) code from Donald Becker and a long,

Ethernet driver for HP cards.
I have, of course, only tested it on my machine--a Vectra 486 with a HP

the throughput.
Any interested parties are welcome to drop me a note.

Are you using a csh variant on the sun?
the csh automatically "nohups" all processes it places in the background.
sh variants (like bash) do not do this and one must use matt's suggestion
to get that functionality.

If you do a 'make sysvr3' it should compile OK with just a few warnings.
Speaking of rzsz, what environment variable needs to be set to make rz
receive from the serial ports instead of stdin? It's a pain having to
type '!rz <> /dev/modem' from kermit all the time.....!

My guess is that you have getty setup improperly for you modem, what I would
guess is happening is that your modem is sending an "OK" through the line
and getty is saying "cool, someone trying to login... but the first character
is capital, I guess they don't have Lowercase capability" (this is the standard
assumption for all UN*X systems, if the first car is capital, all capitals
are printed and the capitals input are mapped to lowercase)
The solution to this would be to reconfigure getty/uugetty to ignore the
first "OK" sent from the modem and/or configure the modem to not echo

Half of dos on one half on the other, half of linux on one and half on

This is how I wanted it....
Linux / of 35megs on SCSI drive (adaptec 1542b)
Dos D: of 60megs on SCSI drive (adaptec 1542b) this is my personal area
Dos C: of 150megs on Maxtor 7213 (this is my bbs)
Linux /usr of 60megs on Maxtor 7213
can I do this and not worry about having problems? How about the
extfs, does this work with the SCSI drives? Any thing I should know about
this, because in the future I was thinking of extfs. Howabout this, can
I have say a /usr directory on two seperate partitions when my needs
grow?
